Tentative Song List / Order :

Louise - Cate's 'Louise Brooks' inspired song (both were written early in 2004), and has gone through a number of different arrangements/rewrites on its journey. The cd title is from this song, and was rumored to be the title of Ms. Brooks autobiography (that she subsequently threw in the fire), inspired by a quote from Goethe (see below). A laid-back smokey blues arrangement with a torch song feel.
Don't Bite the Monkey
- A reggae inspired tune about Tim's pit bull and her anger-management difficulties with a certain wind-up plastic monkey toy.
Nowhere to Go
- a very early song of Tim's, about a tragically hip coffee shop poetess, for some unaccountable reason seasoned with celtic flavorings.
The Good Ones
- a 'lonely girl' tune, with a bad attitude. Alternate Version
(Half Assed Lovers) Better Friends
- a collaboration we've been kicking around for a while, under various guises and titles. A breezy tune about conflict resolution and detente.
Cold and Blue
- A song written a couple years ago for an xmas cd handed out to friends. The title for the cd was written first, and then this tune was built around the title. A depressing little yuletide ditty. Alternate Version
Too Bad So Sad
- a moody little number about regret, actions and consequences.
(Ride the) Crazy Train
- a frantic uptempo little bit of bebop lunacy, keep your hands inside the ride at all times.
A Bit of Confusion
- not even sure what this is about - lyrical gymnastics over a snappy beat, if that helps.
Bed Head
- bad hair day, set to music. uptempo and loud, like the kids like these days.
(Gray) Just Like Yesterday
- just as uplifting as it sounds, inspired by our oh-so-pleasant Michigan winters.
Commander Link, Space Monkey
- a rockin' little outer space chimpanzee song. What more do you need?
Why Are You Still Here?
- an angry little bundle of self hating frustration, for your listening pleasure.
June
- a snappy happy little tune about clinging desperate loneliness and obsession.
(Don't Like) My Song - A leftover song from our 'debut cd' collaborations. A jazzy little shuffler, with a sax solo by Tim's son Keenan as the creamy filling in the middle (kind of like a custard donut with arsenic sprinkled on top). Alternate Version (demo)
Where Did You Go Louise?
- Tim's take on the 'Louise Brooks' song. More along the lines of a slice-of-life folk vignette.

"(young witch): Powder is like a petticoat,
For grey hags hoddy-doddy;
So I sit naked on my goat
And show a strapping body.
(old witch): Our manners are too good dear, my dear,
to match your youthful bragging;
Though young and tender now, don't fear:
You'll rot, and soon be sagging."

Goethe, "Faust"

And for those who can't get enough of Monkeyshine's dusty attic treasures, here are a few more recordings (most are demo recordings, usually recorded fast and dirty, lots of mistakes and poor audio quality):

Anymore - original demo recording with Tim on vocals (Cate sings the version on the cd).
Brief Affair - original demo recording (never used)
